Content-Language meta tag

Also called: content-language, content language header, content-language meta tag, content-language HTTP header

The Content-Language meta tag (<meta http-equiv="content-language" content="en">) signals a page's intended audience language. It is non-conforming (obsolete) in HTML and Google ignores it for language detection, making it a weak SEO signal. Declare language with the html lang attribute and hreflang instead.

The signal exists in two forms: an HTTP response header (Content-Language: en) and the HTML pragma <meta http-equiv="content-language" content="en">. Both were meant as metadata about who a document is for, not what language its text actually is. The W3C draws that line clearly: Content-Language describes the intended audience, while the lang attribute describes the text itself so browsers can handle hyphenation, spell-check, and font selection.

Why it barely moves rankings

Google states it does not read code-level language signals such as the lang attribute or the URL, and it treats the Content-Language header the same way. It determines a page’s language from the visible content. The HTML meta version is also non-conforming in HTML5, so validators flag it and browsers treat it inconsistently.

For language and region targeting, focus on the three things Google actually uses:

Still set <html lang="en-US"> for accessibility (WCAG requires a declared document language). Keep the Content-Language tag out of your SEO plan. It is harmless, but it is not load-bearing.

How it affects your traffic

For an e-commerce store selling across countries or languages, the Content-Language tag will not get the right product page in front of the right shopper. Google reads language from your visible copy, so a Spanish landing page padded with English boilerplate can surface in the wrong market and quietly bleed conversions. Getting hreflang, per-locale URLs, and clean single-language templates right is the part of international e-commerce SEO that actually moves qualified traffic.
