international SEO

Also called: global seo, multi-region seo, multilingual seo, multiregional seo

International SEO is the practice of structuring and signaling a website so search engines serve the right language or country version to each visitor, using URL structure (ccTLDs, subdomains, or subdirectories), hreflang annotations, and other geo-targeting signals.

International SEO splits into two overlapping problems. A multilingual site serves content in more than one language (say, English and French for a Canadian brand). A multi-regional site targets users in different countries, which may share a language but differ in currency, shipping, or terminology. Most global brands are doing both at once.

The three levers

The first decision is URL structure. Google recognizes three main patterns: a country-code top-level domain (example.de), a subdomain (de.example.com), or a subdirectory (example.com/de/). ccTLDs send the strongest country signal but split authority and cost more to run. Subdirectories are cheapest to maintain and keep authority on one domain.

The second lever is hreflang. These annotations tell Google which URL belongs to which language and region, using ISO 639-1 language codes and ISO 3166-1 region codes (for example, en-gb). The rule that trips most teams up: the links must be bidirectional. If page A points to page B but B does not point back, Google ignores the pair. An x-default value catches every language you have not explicitly listed.

The third lever is behavior. Google advises against auto-redirecting by IP and against relying on IP analysis to swap content, since its crawler does not vary its source location to find locale variations. Show a visible language or region switcher instead, and let the user choose.

How it affects your traffic

Broken hreflang is one of the most common ways international sites bleed traffic: signals collapse, the wrong-country page ranks, and localized versions compete with each other instead of each owning its market. When targeting works, each language or region version earns qualified local clicks and stands a better chance of being cited in AI answers for that locale. Our International SEO service audits URL structure, fixes hreflang and geo-targeting, and maps each market to the right page.
