data-driven attribution

Also called: DDA, data-driven attribution model

Data-driven attribution (DDA) assigns conversion credit to each touchpoint from your own account data instead of a fixed rule, using machine learning to compare converting and non-converting paths and reward the interactions that most raise the odds of a key event.

How the model splits credit

Rule-based models follow a formula you pick in advance. Last click hands 100% of the credit to the final interaction; first click gives it all to the first. DDA instead learns from your data. It looks at paths that converted and paths that did not, then estimates how much each touchpoint changed the probability of a key event. Signals include time from the key event, device type, number of interactions, the order of exposure, and creative type.

In GA4, DDA is the default. As of November 2023, Google removed the first-click, linear, time-decay, and position-based models, leaving data-driven, paid and organic last click, and Google paid channels last click. Direct visits get no credit unless the whole path is direct. In Google Ads, DDA is also the default for most conversion actions, and Google notes it performs best with meaningful volume (around 200 conversions and 2,000 ad interactions in 30 days), though accounts are eligible at any level.

Example: a user finds you through an organic blog post, returns a week later on a branded search, then converts from an email. Last click credits the email alone. DDA can spread the credit across all three, so the blog post that started the journey shows real value instead of a zero.

How it affects your traffic

If your reports still run on last-click, organic search usually looks weaker than it is, because it tends to open journeys rather than close them. That undercounting pushes teams to underfund the content and technical work that actually feeds the pipeline. A proper SEO Audit checks which attribution model your GA4 and Google Ads accounts use, and flags tagging or referral errors that quietly shift credit away from organic, so you can size budgets against organic's true assist role, not a last-click illusion.
