Doorway pages

Also called: doorway page, gateway pages

Doorway pages are low-value pages built mainly to rank for specific, similar queries and then funnel visitors on to a different destination. Google treats them as spam ("doorway abuse") and may rank offending sites lower or leave them out of results entirely.

Google’s spam policies group four patterns under “doorway abuse”: running several near-duplicate sites or home pages to blanket a query, spinning up city or region pages that all push traffic to one place, generating pages whose only job is to shuttle visitors into the real part of a site, and publishing near-identical pages that behave more like a search result than a browseable hierarchy.

The tell is intent. A page that exists to catch a query and pass the user along adds a step without adding value. The classic offender is the templated location page: the same paragraph with the city name swapped in, no local address, no area-specific detail, often orphaned from the main navigation.

Localization vs. duplication

A page that earns its spot looks different. A genuine city page carries its own testimonials, photos, pricing, and internal links, and answers something the visitor actually needed. That is the line between localization and duplication.

Enforcement is both algorithmic and manual, and consequences range from lower rankings to full removal. Since May 2026 Google has stated that its spam policies, doorway abuse included, apply across all of Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, so a thin page can now cost you visibility in AI answers too.

The anti-pattern, in URLs:

/plumber-austin/, /plumber-dallas/, /plumber-houston/ all serving one boilerplate template with only the city name changed.

How it affects your traffic

Doorway pages are what happens when page creation gets ahead of page value. If you scale location or service pages without giving each one unique, useful, well-structured content, Google can read the whole set as doorway abuse and suppress it, taking your rankings and any AI-answer visibility with it. On-page SEO is the discipline that prevents that: distinct titles and headings, genuinely local or topic-specific copy, real internal linking, and a clear reason for each URL to exist. Done well, it turns a risky page cluster into pages that each rank on their own merits.
