editorial link

Also called: natural editorial link, natural link, earned link

An editorial link is a backlink a publisher adds on its own, inside real content, because it finds the linked page genuinely useful. It is not paid for, swapped, or requested, and Google treats these earned links as the natural votes of confidence that carry the most weight.

The test is who decided to place the link and why. If a writer or editor chose to reference your page because it helped their readers, that is editorial. If money, a swap, or an outreach ask drove the placement, it is a built link, even when the tactic is white-hat like guest posting. Ahrefs points out there is often no clean way to tell the two apart, which is why Google leans on patterns across a whole profile rather than judging single links.

Common examples: a journalist citing your original survey with the anchor “recent study,” a comparison post naming your tool next to competitors, a resource page pointing to your guide. The anchor text tends to be brand names, bare URLs, or casual phrases like “this guide,” not keyword-stuffed exact match.

Google’s spam policies do not bless or ban a link by name. They target intent. Links created “primarily for the purpose of manipulating rankings” count as link spam, while paid or sponsored placements are fine only when marked with rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow". An editorial link needs no such marking because nobody paid for it. That is the whole point. It also holds up through algorithm shifts and manual reviews far better than links bought in bulk, because it reads as what it is: a real citation from someone who found your work worth pointing to.

How it affects your traffic

Editorial links are the backlinks that actually move rankings and keep their value, because they read as genuine citations to Google's systems instead of placements you arranged. You cannot buy them directly. You earn them with content worth citing plus outreach that puts that content in front of the right editors, which is the work our Link Building service is built around. A profile weighted toward earned editorial links also lowers your risk when Google tightens link-spam enforcement, so the gains compound rather than getting clawed back in the next update.
