Evergreen content

Also called: timeless content, evergreen articles

Evergreen content is content built around a topic whose core answer stays stable over time, so a page keeps earning search traffic long after it is published. Typical formats are how-to guides, definitions, and reference pages, not news or seasonal posts.

What makes content evergreen

Evergreen does not mean “publish once and never touch it again.” It means the topic has durable demand and a semantically stable core answer. A page explaining a 301 redirect will still answer the same question in three years. A post titled “best SEO tactics for 2024” will not. Classic formats: how-to guides, glossaries, definitions, FAQs, and foundational reference pages.

Google does not reward freshness for its own sake, and it warns against faking it. Its people-first content guidance lists changing a page’s date when the content has not substantially changed, and adding or removing content mainly to make a site look “fresh,” as signs of search-engine-first content. What matters is whether the page genuinely helps the reader, not how recent the timestamp looks.

The wrinkle in 2026 is AI search. AI engines lean recent: Ahrefs found AI-cited content is 25.7% fresher on average than content that only ranks organically. But for stable informational queries with no time anchor, established authoritative pages still get cited. So the winning play is a topic-selection strategy plus periodic substantive refreshes: update stats, swap dated examples, add subtopics that emerged, fix broken links. Treat an evergreen page as an asset you maintain, not one you abandon.

How it affects your traffic

Evergreen pages are your compounding SEO assets. They earn links and rankings for years, so the on-page work you put in (clear structure, internal links, entity-rich copy, current schema) pays back over a long horizon instead of decaying like a news post. Our On-Page SEO service builds and periodically refreshes these pages so they keep ranking in Google and stay citable in AI answers, rather than quietly bleeding traffic as the stats and examples inside them go stale.
