Topic cluster
Also called: content cluster, topic clusters, pillar-cluster
A topic cluster is a set of interlinked pages built around one theme: a broad pillar page that gives the overview, plus focused subtopic (cluster) pages that each cover one slice and link back to the pillar. The structure signals to search engines that a site covers the subject in depth.
How the pillar-cluster model works
A pillar page covers a broad topic at a high level and links out to every cluster page. Each cluster page goes deep on one specific question or subtopic and links back to the pillar with descriptive anchor text. Where it fits, cluster pages link to each other too. This hub-and-spoke internal linking tells crawlers the pages share a semantic relationship, which is how a cluster builds topical authority over time.
Former HubSpot staff Anum Hussain and Cambria Davies laid the groundwork in 2015 with their “Topics Over Keywords” research, which found that interlinking related posts lifted rankings and impressions. HubSpot credits that work as the foundation of the pillar-cluster model it later formalized.
A worked example for “email marketing”:
- Pillar: “Email Marketing: The Complete Guide”
- Clusters: “email subject lines”, “email segmentation”, “email deliverability”, “welcome email sequences”
Every cluster links up to the pillar; the pillar links down to each cluster.
The payoff lines up with Google’s own guidance. Its helpful-content self-assessment asks whether a page gives a “substantial, complete, or comprehensive description of the topic,” and the SEO Starter Guide advises organizing a site “in a logical way” so search engines understand how pages relate. A cluster puts both into practice at once: depth on each page, plus a structure that ties that depth together instead of scattering it across one-off posts.
How it affects your traffic
Clusters are how one strong page turns into a ranking system. Instead of a single post competing alone, a pillar plus its clusters catch long-tail queries across the whole subject and funnel internal link equity to the page you most want to rank. The same structure feeds AI answer engines, which prefer sources that cover a theme in depth over scattered one-offs. Planning themes, mapping pillar and cluster pages, and wiring the internal links correctly is core on-page work, which is exactly what our On-Page SEO service handles so the whole set compounds rather than cannibalizing itself.
