query deserves freshness
Also called: QDF, freshness algorithm
Query deserves freshness (QDF) is an SEO industry name for Google boosting recent content when a query is time-sensitive. When search volume and news coverage spike for a topic, Google temporarily weights recency more heavily, so newer pages can outrank older ones.
The term traces to Google’s Amit Singhal, who described a “query deserves freshness” model in a 2007 New York Times interview: the system judges a topic “hot” when news sites and blogs publish heavily on it and Google’s own query stream spikes, then leans toward newer results. Google formalized a broader freshness system in its November 2011 update, which it said affected about 35% of searches.
Which queries trigger it
Google’s 2011 announcement grouped fresh-worthy searches into three buckets:
- Recent events or hot topics:
occupy oakland protest, nba lockout - Regularly recurring events:
presidential election,nfl scores,exxon earnings - Frequent updates:
best slr cameras,subaru impreza reviews
The load-bearing word is deserves. Freshness is query-dependent, not a universal boost. Navigational and evergreen queries (how to tie a tie) get little freshness weighting, so re-dating that content does nothing and can read as manipulation. Google has never published “QDF” in its own developer docs; it is practitioner shorthand for a documented behavior. Trustworthiness and relevance still outweigh a fresh timestamp.
The same pattern shows up in AI answer engines, which pull recent sources for trending questions while sticking to established pages for stable ones. So a freshness call now shapes both classic SERP ranking and which pages get cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT.
How it affects your traffic
Misreading freshness wastes budget in both directions: teams re-publish evergreen pages that never needed it, while genuinely time-sensitive pages (pricing, "best X 2026" roundups, annual guides) go stale and quietly slide down the SERP. SEO consulting classifies your keywords by whether they actually deserve freshness, then sets an update cadence only where recency moves rankings, instead of a blanket "refresh everything" policy. That same map feeds AI search, where recency often decides which of your pages an answer engine cites on trending queries. The payoff is fewer pointless refreshes and fresh signals aimed at the URLs that convert.
