An exact match domain (EMD) is a domain name that matches a target keyword word for word, like bluewidgets.com for "blue widgets." Google's 2012 EMD update stopped low-quality EMDs from ranking on the domain name alone, so an EMD gives no ranking boost by itself today.
An EMD is just a domain built from a search phrase. cheapcarinsurance.com aimed at cheap car insurance is the classic shape. For years these domains got an unearned lift: Google read the keyword in the URL as a strong relevance signal, so thin sites could outrank better pages purely on their name.
What the 2012 update changed
On September 27, 2012, Google shipped the EMD update. Matt Cutts, then head of webspam, called it a small change to “reduce low-quality exact-match domains in search results.” It touched roughly 0.6% of English queries and ran separately from Panda (content) and Penguin (links). The update did not punish every keyword domain. It pulled the ranking crutch out from under EMDs that paired a keyword name with thin content, weak authority, and spammy links, and it left quality sites alone.
The practical result still holds in 2026: a keyword in your domain is not a shortcut. Google ranks the page on content, authority, and brand signals, not on the name over the door. A strong brand domain can still do well when it earns links whose anchor text happens to match the name, but that lift comes from the brand you built, not from the keyword string itself.
