Expired domain abuse is a Google spam policy that targets buying a lapsed domain and repurposing it mainly to manipulate search rankings by hosting low-value content that trades on the domain's past reputation. Why Google added it
Google published this policy on March 5, 2024, alongside scaled content abuse and site reputation abuse. The tactic it targets is old: a domain that once belonged to a real organization keeps residual trust (backlinks, brand mentions, an aged history), and operators buy it after it lapses to shortcut their way to rankings. The policy makes the intent the violation, not the mere act of buying a used domain.
Google’s own examples make the pattern concrete:
- Affiliate content on a domain that used to belong to a government agency
- Commercial medical products on a site once run by a non-profit medical charity
- Casino pages on a former elementary school’s domain
The common thread is a sharp break between what the domain was known for and what it now hosts, paired with content that offers little value to users. Buying an expired domain is not automatically against the rules. Rebuilding a genuine business on one, or redirecting a relevant acquired site, is fine. The line is purchasing purely to harvest ranking signals for thin content.
