first-click attribution

Also called: first-touch attribution, first-interaction attribution

First-click attribution is a single-touch model that gives 100% of the credit for a conversion to the first channel or interaction in a customer's journey. Also called first-touch, it answers what originally brought someone to your brand, ignoring every later touchpoint before the sale.

First-click and last-click sit at opposite ends of the same idea. Last-click hands all the credit to the final interaction before a conversion. First-click credits the one that started the path. Neither splits credit, so both hide the middle of the funnel.

The model answers one question well: which channels introduce new audiences? That makes it a discovery lens. If someone finds you through an organic blog post, comes back weeks later on a branded search, then buys, first-click credits that original organic entry, not the return visit.

Currency note

Google removed first-click from GA4 as a built-in model in November 2023, along with linear, time-decay, and position-based. GA4 now ships data-driven attribution plus two last-click variants (Paid and organic last click and Google paid channels last click). To run a first-touch view today you rebuild it in an Explore report, in BigQuery, or in a dedicated attribution tool.

The trade-off is plain. By loading everything onto the first touch, first-click over-credits awareness channels and ignores the nurture and closing work that seals the deal. It flatters top-of-funnel budgets. Use it to judge discovery, not to decide where the last dollar goes.

How it affects your traffic

First-click framing is how you tell whether organic search is your discovery engine or just your closer. If your best content is not the page catching that first touch, you are handing early credit to ads, social, or a competitor's comparison post. An SEO Audit maps which pages actually earn first organic sessions and finds the thin titles, weak internal links, and indexing gaps that keep your entry pages out of the running. Fix those and organic starts winning the touch that begins the journey, not just the one that ends it.
