Google algorithm

Also called: google search algorithm, google ranking algorithm, search algorithm

The Google algorithm is not a single formula but the combined set of automated ranking systems Google uses to decide which pages best answer a query and in what order they appear. Systems such as PageRank, RankBrain, BERT, and spam detection each weigh different signals, mostly at the page level.

Many systems, not one switch

Google’s own documentation frames ranking as “automated ranking systems that look at many factors and signals about hundreds of billions of web pages.” Those systems work mostly at the page level, so a strong site can still have weak pages, and one good page does not lift everything around it.

The named systems each do a different job. PageRank weighs links, RankBrain and neural matching connect a query to relevant concepts, BERT and MUM parse language and intent, freshness systems surface recent content when a query deserves it, and SpamBrain filters manipulation. There is no single dial an SEO can turn.

Google refreshes these systems constantly and ships broader “core updates” several times a year. A change in what one system rewards can move a whole set of pages at once. In March 2024 Google folded its former helpful content system into the core ranking systems, so content quality is now judged continuously instead of by a standalone classifier that ran on its own schedule.

Practical read: chasing one “ranking factor” rarely works, because relevance, quality, links, and usability get assessed together. A page can carry a clean title tag and valid schema and still slip after a core update if the helpfulness and reliability signals across the site weaken.

How it affects your traffic

When a core update reshuffles your rankings, there is no one setting to flip back, because dozens of systems weigh in together. Recovery means diagnosing which signals actually moved (content helpfulness, link quality, technical health) and aligning the whole site, not patching a single page. That site-wide diagnosis is the core of SEO consulting: reading the algorithm's behavior against your own traffic data and prioritizing the fixes that genuinely move positions.
