RankBrain
Also called: Google RankBrain
RankBrain is Google's machine-learning ranking system, launched in 2015, that interprets the meaning and intent behind search queries, including novel ones it has never seen, and matches them to relevant pages even when those pages don't contain the exact words typed.
Before RankBrain, Google leaned heavily on matching the literal words in a query to words on a page. RankBrain changed that. It converts language into vectors (mathematical representations of meaning) so it can group words and phrases that sit close together in intent. Google describes it as a system that helps it “understand how words are related to concepts,” so it can return relevant content even when a page “doesn’t contain all the exact words used in a search.”
Why novel queries matter
A large share of what people type into Google each day are phrasings it has never seen before. When RankBrain meets one, it guesses which known phrases carry similar meaning and ranks accordingly.
A worked example: someone searches what's the title of the consumer at the highest level of a food chain. No page is written with those exact words, but RankBrain connects the phrase to the concept “apex predator” and surfaces pages about that, even though they never use the searcher’s wording.
Google still lists RankBrain as an active ranking system in 2026, working alongside BERT and neural matching. Practically, that means you cannot win by stuffing exact-match keywords. Pages rank when they cover the concept and its related sub-topics well enough that Google’s models read them as a strong answer to the intent behind the query, not just the string of words.
How it affects your traffic
RankBrain is why keyword-first tactics quietly stopped working. If your pages target strings instead of the concepts and intent behind them, they get out-ranked by content Google's models judge as a fuller answer, even when your exact-match keyword count is higher. SEO consulting maps the concepts and questions a query actually implies, then structures your content so RankBrain and its sibling systems read it as the strong match. That is the difference between ranking for the words someone typed and ranking for what they meant.
