Google Fred

Also called: fred update, google fred update

Google Fred is the community nickname for an unconfirmed Google ranking update that rolled out around March 7, 2017. It hit sites built for ad revenue rather than readers: thin content, heavy ads, and aggressive affiliate links. Google never officially named or confirmed it.

“Fred” is not an official Google product name. It came from a joke. Google’s Gary Illyes told SEOs on Twitter that from then on every unnamed update should just be called “Fred.” The community kept the name for the specific March 7, 2017 shakeup, but Illyes’ underlying point was serious: Google ships many quality updates it never labels.

What Fred targeted

Site owners who tracked the drop found a pattern. The pages that lost the most were built to monetize traffic, not serve it: high ad density, banner-stuffed layouts, thin or duplicated articles, and pages padded with affiliate links. Some affected sites lost large chunks of organic traffic in a single day. Illyes tied the update back to the “quality” section of Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines, which is the closest thing to an official explanation Google offered.

Because Fred was never confirmed as a standalone system, the practical read is to treat it as part of Google’s ongoing quality filtering, not a special penalty to lift. Recovery means fixing the underlying signal: cut intrusive ads, remove or rewrite thin pages, and make each page earn its ranking on usefulness. Google’s own core-update guidance points site owners the same way, toward a site-wide, people-first content self-assessment rather than quick fixes, and it warns that gains can take months to confirm.

How it affects your traffic

If your organic traffic slid without a manual action or a named core update, a Fred-style quality problem is a common cause: too many ads, too much thin content, or affiliate pages that add nothing for the reader. These issues rarely resolve with one fix, so an honest site-wide diagnosis matters more than guesswork. This is the kind of quality untangling our SEO Consulting engagements handle, separating a real content-quality drag from an unrelated technical or link issue before you spend on a full rebuild.
