Google Panda
Also called: panda update, panda algorithm
Google Panda was a 2011 Google ranking change that demoted thin, low-quality, and duplicate content while rewarding sites with original, in-depth content. It is no longer a standalone update: Google folded Panda into its core ranking systems in 2015, so sitewide quality scoring now runs continuously.
Panda scored a site “overall,” not page by page. In Google’s own words it is “an algorithm that’s applied to sites overall,” which “measures the quality of a site.” That detail matters: a pile of thin or duplicated pages could drag down rankings for the whole domain, including your good pages.
How Panda judged quality
Google never published a formula, but its 2011 guidance listed the questions a quality rater would ask. Would you trust this article? Is it written by an expert? Are there duplicate or redundant articles on the same topic? Would you give your credit card to this site? Does the page offer original content, reporting, research, or analysis? Panda targeted the “content farm” pattern of that era, mass-produced shallow pages built for search engines rather than people, and rewarded original reporting and thoughtful analysis.
Two things changed since. In 2015, Panda stopped being a separate, periodically refreshed filter and became part of Google’s core ranking systems, so quality is now assessed continuously rather than in punishing batch “Panda updates.” The same intent later carried into the Helpful Content system, which Google likewise folded into core ranking in March 2024. The name retired; the signal did not. Sitewide content quality is a persistent, always-on factor, which is why chasing a single “Panda recovery” trick misses the point.
How it affects your traffic
Because Panda-style quality scoring is sitewide and always-on, a cluster of thin, duplicate, or auto-generated pages can suppress rankings for your strong pages too, not just the weak ones. Recovery is a diagnosis job: find which pages drag the domain down, then prune, consolidate, or rewrite them, and rebuild internal signals around the pages worth keeping. That sitewide content-quality triage is exactly what an SEO Consulting engagement handles, mapping the thin and duplicate pages and setting a plan to lift the whole domain rather than one URL at a time.
