Google Maps
Google Maps is Google's free mapping and local-discovery product for web and mobile. For businesses, it is where a verified Google Business Profile appears as a map pin, in the local pack, and in navigational and "near me" searches, giving people directions, hours, reviews, and contact details.
How businesses show up on the map
When someone searches a place or a service, Google Maps ranks listings by three signals it names openly: relevance (how well your Business Profile matches the query), distance (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (how well-known you are, which includes links to your site and how many reviews you have). You cannot buy your way up. Google states plainly there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.
Only a verified Business Profile can show its details to users. Once you claim and verify, you control the category, hours, photos, and service area, and you can reply to reviews. Example: a Barcelona bakery searching “bakery near me” competes on all three signals at once, so a complete profile with fresh photos and steady reviews often outranks a closer shop that has a thin listing.
Two practical notes. A new profile has to be verified before its details show at all, so factor that step into any launch. And edits are not always instant: Google says they usually appear within about 10 minutes, but a change that needs review can take up to 30 days. Reviews carry real weight: BrightLocal’s 2026 practitioner survey places the Business Profile itself and reviews among the top factors for the local pack, behind the primary business category.
One naming point that trips people up: “Google Maps” is the product, while “Google Business Profile” (renamed from Google My Business in 2021) is the listing you actually manage inside it. Optimizing that profile is what moves you on the map.
How it affects your traffic
Ranking well on Google Maps puts you in front of people ready to act, since "near me" and navigational searches usually carry high purchase intent. A weak or unverified profile means a competitor collects the calls, direction taps, and walk-ins that should have been yours. Our Local SEO work verifies and optimizes your Business Profile, builds review velocity, and strengthens the relevance and prominence signals Google uses, so you hold position in the local pack and on the map for the searches that drive revenue.
