Google Shopping ads
Also called: product listing ads, PLA, shopping ads, Google PLAs
Google Shopping ads (also called Product Listing Ads or PLAs) are paid, product-based ads that show a product image, price, title, and store name. Google builds them from the product data you submit in Merchant Center and shows them across the Shopping tab, Search, Images, YouTube, and more.
Unlike text ads, Shopping ads are not built from keywords you pick. Google matches them to searches using the product data in your Merchant Center feed: titles, descriptions, images, GTINs, price, and availability. You link a Google Ads account to Merchant Center, then run the products through a Shopping campaign or a Performance Max campaign. Standard Shopping ads, Local Inventory Ads (for in-store stock), and Vehicle Ads are all built from the same feed.
Why this matters for SEO, not just ads
The important part for an e-commerce site: the exact same Merchant Center feed that powers paid Shopping ads also powers free product listings, the organic product grids that appear in the Shopping tab and in Search. Google pulls both from your product data. So the work that makes your feed clean and complete, accurate titles, structured product attributes, correct GTINs, high-quality images, competitive pricing, and matching data on the actual product page, lifts your unpaid Shopping visibility at the same time.
That overlap is where paid and organic meet. A retailer with a sloppy feed pays more per click on the ad side and shows up weaker (or not at all) on the free side. A retailer with a disciplined feed and well-structured product pages gets cheaper, higher-quality paid placement and a stream of free Shopping traffic on top. The feed and the product page are the shared foundation.
How it affects your traffic
Shopping ads themselves are a paid channel, but they run on the same product feed and product-page data as Google's free organic product listings. If your feed and product schema are weak, you lose the free Shopping grid traffic that sits right next to the ads and pay more for the ads you do run. Our E-commerce SEO work tightens product titles, attributes, structured data, and page content so the same catalog earns organic Shopping and Search visibility, reducing how much of your demand you have to buy back through PLAs.
