Google Trends

Also called: google trends tool, google trends explore

Google Trends is a free Google tool that charts the relative popularity of search queries over time and by region on a 0 to 100 index, not as raw search volume. Each data point is divided by total searches for its time and place, so the numbers compare interest between terms rather than counting searches.

How the 0 to 100 index works

The 100 on the chart is not a volume, it is the single highest point in the range you picked, and 0 does not mean zero searches. Change the date range, country, or category and every number rescales. Google builds the index from a random, anonymized, aggregated sample of searches, which is why two pulls of the same query can differ slightly, and why low-volume terms show statistical noise that Google adds on purpose to protect privacy.

For SEO work, two panels matter more than the headline line. Related queries, split into Top and Rising, surface the phrasing real people use and catch breakout terms before keyword tools report a volume. The regional breakdown shows where demand concentrates, which is useful for local pages and international targeting.

Trends answers questions a volume number cannot: is this term seasonal, is demand growing or fading, and did my traffic drop because I slipped or because the whole category cooled. Google’s own guidance is to publish ahead of seasonal peaks (its example shows Brie spiking twice a year in the US but once in the UK) and to treat Trends as one data point, not a forecast. It is not a poll and reports no absolute traffic.

Google opened a Trends API in alpha in 2025. As of 2026, confirm current access before wiring it into reporting. For everyday research the Explore view (up to five terms compared at once) is still the fastest read.

How it affects your traffic

Google Trends tells you which topics to prioritize and when, but it does not tell you how much traffic a term will actually earn or how hard it will be to rank for. Reading relative interest against your own analytics and keyword-difficulty data is where a term turns into a content decision. That triage, deciding what to build, in what order, and around which seasonal windows, is the core of our SEO Consulting work, so effort goes to demand that is real and rising instead of a spike that fades.
