guest blogging
Also called: guest post, guest posting, contributor post
Guest blogging is writing and publishing an article on another website or blog, usually in exchange for an author byline and a link back to your own site. It is used to reach a new audience and to earn backlinks that build authority.
Guest blogging works as a trade. You supply an article a publisher wants, and in return you get exposure to their readers, a byline, and often a contextual link. Marketers use it for two jobs at once: brand reach and link building.
Where Google draws the line
Google does not ban guest posts. Its spam policies flag them only in a specific pattern: “links with optimized anchor text in articles, guest posts, or press releases distributed on other sites,” plus advertorials where payment buys links that pass ranking credit. Google added “large-scale article marketing or guest posting campaigns with keyword-rich anchor text links” to its link-schemes list in the 2013 guidelines update, and reiterated it in a 2017 reminder about large-scale article campaigns.
The dividing line is intent. A post that genuinely informs another site’s audience is fine. A post churned out mainly to plant a keyword-rich link, then duplicated across dozens of sites, is a link scheme.
If a link is paid for or part of a bulk arrangement, Google says qualify it so it does not pass ranking credit:
<a href="https://example.com" rel="sponsored">anchor</a>
Use rel="sponsored" for paid placements or rel="nofollow" for links you cannot vouch for. An editorially earned link inside a relevant, well-written post can stay a normal followed link.
In practice, safe guest posting means topical relevance, real editorial standards on the host site, natural anchor text (brand or descriptive, not exact-match at scale), and a cap on how often you repeat the same link target.
How it affects your traffic
Guest posting is one tactic inside a wider link-building program, not a standalone growth hack. Placed on relevant, editorially real sites with natural anchors, guest posts add authority signals that help your pages rank and get cited. Run at scale with exact-match anchors on low-quality sites, they invite link spam actions that cost rankings instead. Our Link Building service handles the vetting, relevance matching, and anchor discipline so placements build authority without tripping Google's policies.
