serp
Also called: search engine results page, serps, search results page
A SERP (search engine results page) is the page a search engine returns for a query. It combines organic listings, paid ads, and SERP features like featured snippets, image packs, and AI Overviews, and Google changes which features appear based on what each query needs.
What actually sits on a SERP
Google calls the visible parts of a results page “visual elements,” which it defines as “the building blocks of the Google Search results page that a user can perceive or interact with.” Its Visual Elements gallery sorts them into five groups: text results (the classic title, snippet, and URL), rich results (graphical listings powered by structured data), image results, video results, and exploration features like People Also Ask and related searches. Layered on top are paid ads and, increasingly, AI Overviews.
The makeup is not fixed. Google assembles each SERP around the query. A search for bicycle repair shops tends to surface local results and no images, while modern bicycle pulls in images instead. Ranking runs programmatically, and Google states it “doesn’t accept payment to rank pages higher,” though ad slots do sit above and below the organic block.
For SEO, that matters because ranking #1 no longer means owning the top of the page. Named-practitioner analysis in 2026 (Aleyda Solis, working from Similarweb data comparing January 2025 to January 2026) found classic organic click share falling across all four verticals tested, text ads gaining share in every one, and AI Overviews present on 12-33% of the SERPs tested. Reading the live SERP before you target a keyword tells you what Google actually rewards there. A page dominated by shopping modules and ads calls for a different asset than a page of ten organic links.
How it affects your traffic
Your ranking position is only worth what the rest of the SERP allows. If the page for your target keyword is stacked with ads, a local pack, and an AI Overview, a #3 organic spot can sit below the fold and earn a fraction of the clicks its rank implies. Reading each keyword's live SERP before committing content or budget is core to how our SEO consulting picks targets, so you pursue queries where you can win the click, not just the ranking.
