information architecture

Also called: ia

Information architecture (IA) is the practice of organizing, structuring, and labeling a website's content so people and search engines can find what they need. In SEO it shapes how pages are grouped into categories, how they link to each other, and how deep any page sits from the homepage.

Where IA meets SEO

Nielsen Norman Group frames IA as two jobs: identifying what content and functionality a site holds, and the organization, structure, and nomenclature that define how those pieces relate. Search engines care about the second job directly. Google builds its picture of your site from internal links, not folder names. Its Search Central guidance says grouping topically similar pages into directories helps Google learn how often a section changes and crawl it at the right cadence, and that descriptive link text tells users and search engines what a linked page covers before they visit.

Good IA shows up in a few concrete places:

Weak IA creates orphan pages, duplicate paths to the same content, and shallow category pages that fight each other for one query (keyword cannibalization). Google will still index a messy site, but a clean structure spreads link equity, clarifies which page owns which topic, and makes the whole site cheaper to crawl. IA is planned in spreadsheets and diagrams first, then expressed as navigation, not the other way around.

How it affects your traffic

IA problems rarely show up as one broken page. They show up as a whole section that underperforms: categories overlap, internal links point at the wrong page, or important pages are buried five clicks deep, so rankings and crawl efficiency both suffer and new content cannot fix a structure that dilutes it. An SEO Consulting engagement maps your current architecture, finds the cannibalization and orphan pages, and redesigns the hierarchy and internal-link paths so authority flows to the pages that convert. Reach for it when you suspect the structure, not the content, is capping your growth.
