ccTLD

Also called: country code top-level domain, country code domain, ccTLDs

A ccTLD (country-code top-level domain) is a two-letter domain ending tied to a specific country, like .de for Germany or .fr for France. It sends Google a strong signal that a site is meant for that country, which is why stores use ccTLDs to geotarget international markets.

Google lists three URL structures you can use to geotarget a site: ccTLDs, subdomains on a generic domain (gTLD), and subdirectories on a gTLD. A ccTLD gives the clearest signal (example.de), works no matter where your server sits, and cleanly separates markets. The tradeoffs Google names are real too: ccTLDs cost more, can carry registration restrictions, need separate infrastructure, and each one targets only a single country.

The vanity ccTLD catch

Google treats a set of “vanity” ccTLDs as generic, including .co, .io, .me, and .tv, because owners and users read them as brand endings rather than country signals. So registering .io gives you no automatic geotargeting.

Do not confuse two separate stories. Google finished redirecting its own country search domains (like google.fr) to google.com, but that only changes what people see in the browser address bar. Google says it “won’t affect the way Search works,” and it does not change how a ccTLD you own signals geotargeting for your own site. Website ccTLDs remain a valid signal. For a store living on one generic domain, subdirectories plus correct hreflang are the lighter alternative to running a separate ccTLD per country.

How it affects your traffic

Your domain strategy sets the ceiling on how far you can scale internationally. Splitting into ccTLDs (example.de, example.fr) gives each market a strong local signal but fragments link authority across separate sites and multiplies technical overhead, so a fresh store often ranks slowly in every new country. Consolidating into subdirectories on one domain with correct hreflang usually compounds authority faster, but picking wrong is expensive to unwind once products, URLs, and backlinks exist. Our E-commerce SEO work maps the domain structure to your target markets before you commit.
