Justifications

Also called: local pack justifications, google local justifications, google business profile justifications

In local SEO, justifications are the short snippets Google adds under a business in the local pack, local finder, and Maps to explain why that result matches the query, for example a quoted review, a "their website mentions..." line, or an "in stock" tag.

Where justifications come from

Google builds justifications from data it already holds about you: Google reviews, the Services section of your Business Profile, website copy (including meta descriptions and image alt text), Google Posts from the last 60 days, your menu, product data, and user answers to Maps’ “Know this place?” prompts. Practitioners have documented a local pack listing showing up to two justifications at once.

Common types include a quoted Review, Their website mentions..., Provides, In stock, On the menu, and Sold here. Say someone searches “gluten free pizza near me.” A pizzeria might surface with a review justification quoting a diner (“best gluten free crust in town”) instead of a plain address line. That quote does the selling before the click.

Most are influenceable, but only indirectly. You cannot type a justification in; Google picks it. What you can do: ask happy customers to mention specific dishes or services in reviews, list every service in your Business Profile, write website and meta text the way people actually search, publish Posts, and list your products so In stock can fire. Product availability can come from a Merchant Center feed or from Google’s point-of-sale scanning, and for scanned inventory Google marks a product “in stock” only when its scanning and sales pattern show high confidence the item is available. Local search specialists note Google leans hard on review justifications, likely because shoppers trust peer wording over a business describing itself. The Sold here label is the main one you cannot steer, since it is assembled from user survey answers rather than anything you publish.

How it affects your traffic

Justifications are free copy Google writes under your listing, and a strong review or "website mentions" snippet makes your result look more relevant than the ones beside it, which lifts clicks from the pack. Our Local SEO work seeds the review language, Business Profile service listings, and on-site copy that lead Google to pick a persuasive justification instead of a plain address line. Left unmanaged, a competitor's quoted review can win the click even when you rank right next to them.
