key event

Also called: conversion event, GA4 conversion, key events

In Google Analytics 4, a key event is any event you flag as important to your business, such as a form submission or purchase, so GA4 counts it separately. On March 21, 2024, Google renamed Analytics "conversions" to "key events," reserving "conversion" for Google Ads.

Every hit GA4 records is an “event” (a page_view, a scroll, a click). A key event is an ordinary event you have marked as mattering to the business, so GA4 counts it on its own and surfaces it in reports like Engagement and the key-events column across acquisition tables.

Key event vs conversion

Before March 2024, GA4 called these “conversions.” Google split the vocabulary so Analytics and Google Ads stop disagreeing: an action important to your business is now a key event, while conversion is reserved for the actions you optimize ad bidding around. Existing conversions carried over automatically as key events, and reporting did not change, so you keep your history.

You mark one in Admin > Events by toggling the star (or “Mark as key event”), or on a new event via Create event. Common examples: generate_lead, purchase, sign_up, a contact-form submit. Once flagged, GA4 tracks the key-event rate per channel, so you can see which organic landing pages actually drive the action, not just traffic.

For SEO this is the scoreboard. Rankings and sessions are inputs; a key event is the outcome you tie effort to. If your key events are misconfigured (double-firing, missing on the thank-you page, or never marked at all), your organic reports either overstate or hide real performance, and you end up optimizing the wrong pages.

How it affects your traffic

Getting key events right is the difference between an SEO program you can prove and one you can only guess at. Our SEO Audit checks that your key events fire once, on the right pages, and map to real business actions, so organic performance is measured accurately instead of inflated by double-counting or lost on untagged confirmation pages. With clean key-event data, we can aim content and technical fixes at the pages that convert, not just the ones that pull sessions.
