A link penalty is a loss of Google rankings caused by manipulative backlinks that break Google's link spam policies. It arrives two ways: a manual action a reviewer applies (visible in Search Console), or algorithmic devaluation where SpamBrain ignores the offending links.
Google’s spam policies define link spam as creating links to or from a site primarily to manipulate search rankings. That covers buying or selling links, excessive link exchanges (“link to me and I’ll link to you”), automated link creation, and keyword-rich links stuffed into widgets spread across many sites.
Two ways a link penalty hits
When Google catches this, one of two things happens. A manual action means a human reviewer flagged your profile. You get an “Unnatural links to your site” notice in the Search Console Manual Actions report, and some or all of your pages can drop or vanish until you fix it. The algorithmic route is quieter. Since the December 2022 link spam update, SpamBrain neutralizes unnatural links, meaning it turns them off rather than penalizing. You get no notice; you simply lose the ranking credit those links were passing.
Recovery depends on the type. For a manual action you download your backlinks, ask owners to remove the bad ones (or add rel="nofollow"), disavow what you cannot remove, then hit Request Review with documentation. Algorithmic devaluation has no review button. You rebuild with links that earn their place.
