Manual action

Also called: manual penalty, manual action penalty, unnatural links penalty

A manual action is a penalty a human reviewer at Google applies when a site violates Google's spam policies. Affected pages are ranked lower or dropped from Search results, and the notice appears in the Manual Actions report in Google Search Console.

A manual action is the only kind of Google penalty that Google tells you about directly. Google detects spam-policy violations through automated systems and, as needed, human review, and when a reviewer confirms a violation they issue the action against some or all of the site.

How to spot and clear one

Open Search Console, then Security and Manual actions, then Manual actions. If the panel says no issues detected, a traffic drop is algorithmic, not manual, and a reconsideration request will not help. If it lists an issue, it names the violation type and the affected scope (the whole site or specific URLs).

Common types include unnatural links to your site, unnatural links from your site, thin content with little added value, cloaking and sneaky redirects, hidden text and keyword stuffing, user-generated spam, and site reputation abuse. A structured data manual action is narrower: the page loses rich result eligibility but keeps its normal web ranking.

Recovery is a fix-then-appeal loop. Clean up every affected page or link (for unnatural links that often means removing them or filing a disavow file), then click Request Review in the report and describe what was wrong, what you changed, and the outcome. Reviews run several days to a few weeks, longer for link cases. Do not resubmit before you get a decision, and fix the whole site rather than a sample, because partial fixes get rejected.

How it affects your traffic

A manual action can erase most of your organic traffic overnight, and unlike an algorithmic dip you cannot code or write your way out of it on your own timeline. Recovery requires diagnosing the exact violation, remediating every instance, and submitting a reconsideration request a human reviewer will accept, which is easy to get wrong and slow to retry. Our SEO consulting engagement handles that end to end: reading the specific manual action, building the cleanup and disavow, and drafting the appeal so you recover once instead of cycling through rejected reviews.
