linkable asset
Also called: link magnet, link bait, linkbait
A linkable asset is a piece of content built specifically to attract backlinks, such as an original study, a free tool, an interactive calculator, or a definitive guide. Because it gives other sites a reason to cite it, it earns editorial links naturally instead of relying on manual placement.
What makes content “linkable”
People rarely link to a product or pricing page. They link to something that helps them make a point: a stat they can cite, a tool they can recommend, a chart they can embed. A linkable asset is engineered around that reflex. Ahrefs groups the common formats into a handful of types: original studies and surveys, free tools and calculators, awards and rankings, definitive guides, and coined terms.
The asset does two jobs. First, it earns editorial links, the kind Google actually wants. Google’s spam policies define link spam as “creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings,” and single out bought links, excessive exchanges, and optimized-anchor guest posts. A real linkable asset sidesteps all of that. A journalist cites your data because it is useful, not because you paid for placement.
Second, it compounds. A calculator or a research page keeps pulling references for years, so the cost of building it spreads across every link it earns. One asset can support an entire outreach campaign, because you are pitching a resource, not asking for a favor.
The catch, per Ahrefs: assets “don’t attract links out of thin air.” You still have to promote them through outreach, digital PR, and internal linking. The asset lowers the friction, it does not remove the work.
Example: a fintech that publishes a mortgage payment calculator hands every personal-finance blogger a natural reason to link when they explain amortization.
How it affects your traffic
Backlinks remain one of the strongest ranking signals, and the sites that win them at scale almost always have a few assets doing the heavy lifting. If your link profile is stuck, the bottleneck is usually that you have nothing worth linking to, only service and product pages. A link building program starts by identifying or building the asset, then runs outreach and digital PR against it, so the links you earn are editorial and durable rather than the kind Google's spam policies flag and discount.
