Local citations
Also called: citations, NAP citations, business citations
Local citations are online mentions of a business's name, address, and phone number (NAP) on directories, review sites, and other web pages. Consistent citations help search engines confirm the business exists at a given location and trust it enough to rank it in local results.
Citations come in two forms. Structured citations sit in formatted directory listings (Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and niche or local directories), where your NAP fills fixed fields. Unstructured citations are looser mentions in blog posts, news articles, event pages, or social profiles. Both count, as long as the details line up.
Data aggregators and why consistency wins
Many citations spread through data aggregators such as Foursquare, Data Axle, and Neustar Localeze, which push a single business record out to dozens of downstream sites and voice assistants at once. That reach helps when your data is right and hurts when it is wrong.
Search engines match records literally, so “Ste 200” versus “Suite 200”, an old phone number, or a former address can read as two different businesses and split the trust between them. Picture a plumber who moves across town: if the old address still sits on twenty directories, Google sees conflicting signals about where the business actually is.
Google’s own local ranking guidance ties prominence to information it gathers about a business from across the web, including how many sites link to it. Citations make up a large part of that off-profile footprint, which is why local SEO practitioners treat clean, consistent NAP data as the groundwork before chasing reviews or links.
How it affects your traffic
Local citations feed the signals behind the Google map pack and Google Maps, which is where "near me" and "city plus service" searches turn into calls and visits. If your NAP is scattered or stale across directories, you can lose those local rankings to competitors with cleaner data, even when your website is otherwise strong. Our Local SEO service audits citations across directories and data aggregators, resolves conflicts, and builds the missing listings so search engines trust one clear record of your business.
