Citation building
Also called: citation building service, citation cleanup, local citations, NAP citations
Citation building is the practice of creating and maintaining online listings of a business's name, address, and phone number (NAP) across directories, review sites, and maps. Accurate, consistent citations feed Google's prominence signal and support local pack and Google Maps rankings.
Structured vs unstructured citations
A structured citation is a formal directory listing with fixed NAP fields (Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, Apple Maps, Yellow Pages, plus industry and city directories). An unstructured citation is a mention of your business in running text: a local news story, a sponsor page, or a blog roundup. Both count, and both need the same name, address, and phone that appear on your Google Business Profile.
Google names three local ranking inputs: relevance, distance, and prominence. Citations mainly move prominence, Google’s read on how established and well-known a business is across the web. Google’s own guidance says businesses with complete, accurate information are more likely to show in local results, and that prominence is based on information from across the web, including links and reviews.
Citation building has two jobs. Coverage means getting listed on the platforms that matter for your industry and city, so the same entity appears in more trusted places. Cleanup means finding old listings with a former address, a typo, or a dead phone number and correcting them so every source agrees. Inconsistent NAP is one of the most common local issues, because conflicting data makes it harder for Google to trust which details are right.
Volume is not the goal. In the 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey (run by Whitespark and reported by BrightLocal), citation signals carry roughly 6% weight, near the bottom of the table, so a handful of accurate listings on high-authority directories beats hundreds of sloppy ones. Anchor on the majors first (Google, Apple, Bing, Yelp), then add niche and geographic directories.
How it affects your traffic
If your NAP is inconsistent across the web, you are quietly capping how often you appear in the local pack and Google Maps, which is where most "near me" clicks and calls come from. Cleaning up conflicting listings and filling gaps on the right directories is usually one of the fastest local wins, because it lifts prominence without waiting on new content or links. Our Local SEO service handles the citation audit, the cleanup, and the ongoing consistency checks so your listings stop working against each other.
