Local ranking factors

Also called: local search ranking factors, Google local ranking factors, local pack ranking factors

Local ranking factors are the signals Google uses to order business results in the local pack and Google Maps. Google names three: relevance (how well a Business Profile matches the query), distance (how far the business is from the searcher), and prominence (how well-known the business is).

The three factors, and what you can move

Google does not weight relevance, distance, and prominence equally on every search. Distance often sets the field: results recalculate as the searcher moves, so a closer business gets a structural edge. The rest is where a campaign lives.

Relevance is driven heavily by your Google Business Profile, and the single biggest lever is your primary category. The 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey (run by Whitespark, with analysis from BrightLocal) puts the primary GBP category at or near the top of Local Pack factors, and choosing the wrong one actively hurts you. Prominence pulls in off-profile signals: links to your site, mentions across the web, and reviews. Google states plainly that “more reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking,” and reviews now rank among the strongest Local Pack signals, with recency and steady velocity mattering more than a one-time batch.

Two things people get wrong. First, you cannot buy position. Google says “there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.” Local Services Ads and the paid map pin are ads, sold separately from organic results. Second, the factors compound. A complete, correctly categorized profile with fresh reviews can outrank a nearer competitor whose listing is thin. For example, a plumber four miles out with 200 recent reviews and an exact primary category can beat one a mile closer with twelve stale ones.

How it affects your traffic

Distance is fixed for any given searcher, so your entire opportunity sits in relevance and prominence, and that is exactly what a Local SEO engagement targets. Fixing your primary category, closing NAP gaps across citations, and building a steady review cadence is the day-to-day work that moves a business into the three-pack for searches it was invisible for. Because the local pack shows only three results, moving from position four to position two is often the difference between a call and no call. Our Local SEO service focuses on these controllable signals so you capture the share of ranking that is not proximity.
