Proximity
Also called: proximity to searcher, distance ranking factor, proximity ranking factor
Proximity is how close a searcher is to a business, one of three main signals (with relevance and prominence) Google uses to rank local results. Google measures the distance between the searcher's location and each business address, and closer businesses tend to rank higher for the same query.
In Google’s own local ranking guidance the factor is called “distance,” defined as “how far each business is from the customer who’s searching.” Proximity is the industry name for the same thing. When a searcher does not say where they are, Google “uses what it knows about their location,” usually the device GPS or IP.
Why you can’t just “optimize” proximity
Unlike relevance or prominence, distance is not something you edit on a page. Google calculates it live from the searcher’s location, then compares that point to your verified business address. Move the searcher a few blocks and the whole local pack can reshuffle.
Example: someone standing outside a coffee shop searches “espresso near me.” Google weights the shops within a short radius first, so a well-reviewed cafe a mile away may sit below a plainer one across the street. Search the same words from the other side of town and the winners flip.
Two things follow. First, there is no single “rank” in local search. Your position changes with every searcher’s location, which is why grid tools that sample rankings across a map are more honest than one-number checks. Second, proximity sets the pool, but relevance and prominence decide who wins inside it. Google notes a farther business can outrank a closer one when it is a clearly better match. So the lever is not distance, it is winning more of the radius you already sit in: accurate categories, a verified profile, steady reviews, and local links.
How it affects your traffic
Because your local rank moves with every searcher's location, the practical goal is to win a larger share of the searches happening near your address. That comes from core Local SEO work: a fully verified and correctly categorized Google Business Profile, consistent NAP citations, review velocity, and location or service-area pages that reinforce relevance. Get those right and you capture more of the map grid around you, which is where local calls, direction requests, and store visits actually come from.
