macro conversion
Also called: primary conversion, macro goal
A macro conversion is the primary action a site exists to drive, the outcome tied directly to revenue or your main business goal, such as a completed purchase, a submitted lead form, or a booked demo. It is the endpoint that smaller micro conversions build toward.
The macro versus micro split comes from analytics practitioner Avinash Kaushik, who argued that reporting only the headline conversion rate ignores the large majority of visitors who leave without buying. A macro conversion is the goal the whole site is built for (order placed, lead submitted, subscription started). Micro conversions are the smaller signals that predict it: adding to cart, downloading a guide, starting a form. Nielsen Norman Group frames micro conversions as either process milestones on the way to the goal or secondary actions that hint at future intent.
How it maps to GA4
In Google Analytics 4, what you would call a macro conversion is configured as a key event. Google renamed “conversions” to “key events” in 2024, so you now mark the event that matters, for example purchase or generate_lead, and GA4 counts it. Keep it to one or two true macro conversions per property. If you flag ten events as key events, none of them mean anything.
Example: a boutique agency site might set contact_form_submit as its macro conversion, while treating pricing_page_view and a 90 percent case-study scroll as micro conversions that forecast it. The macro number tells you whether the site earns money. The micro numbers tell you where the funnel leaks and which design or content change moved the needle before the sale ever happens.
How it affects your traffic
Organic traffic only pays off if it produces macro conversions, so an SEO audit should not stop at rankings and clicks. Our SEO Audit checks that your macro conversion is actually tracked (a real GA4 key event, firing once, not double-counted), that high-intent pages route toward it, and that internal links and CTAs push visitors down the funnel instead of into dead ends. When an audit finds sessions climbing while macro conversions stay flat, the problem is usually intent mismatch or a broken conversion path, not a ranking gap, and that is exactly what we isolate.
