multi-channel funnels
Also called: MCF, multi-channel funnels reports, MCF reports
Multi-Channel Funnels (MCF) was a Universal Analytics report set showing the full sequence of channels a visitor touched before converting, so you could see how organic search, paid, social, and direct assist each other. Google retired it; the GA4 successor is the Attribution paths report.
Multi-Channel Funnels answered one question: which channels helped a conversion happen, not just which one closed it. It was built from conversion paths, the ordered list of interactions a user made before converting.
What the reports actually showed
Universal Analytics grouped MCF into four reports. Assisted Conversions showed how often a channel started or helped a conversion versus closed it. Top Conversion Paths listed the ordered channel sequences that led to conversions. Time Lag measured days from first touch to conversion, and Path Length counted how many touches a path contained. By default only interactions in the last 30 days counted, adjustable from 1 to 90 days.
The point was to escape last-click thinking. In a last-click view, a purchase gets credited entirely to whatever channel closed it, often Direct or branded Paid. MCF exposed the assists. A path like Organic Search > Email > Direct shows organic opened the relationship even though it never got the final-click credit.
Universal Analytics has been retired, and Google now labels the original MCF articles as legacy. The current home for this analysis is GA4’s Attribution paths report (formerly named Conversion paths), under Advertising. It shows the paths users take to key events, plus metrics like days to key event and touchpoints to key event, and lets you re-credit those paths under different attribution models instead of last click.
How it affects your traffic
If you judge SEO on last-click conversions alone, organic search almost always looks weak, because it tends to open journeys that email or direct later close. The path and assist data is where organic earns its real credit, so misreading it can get an SEO budget cut for the wrong reason. A proper SEO Audit checks that GA4 attribution and key events are wired up correctly before anyone reads channel numbers, so organic's assist role shows up instead of leaking into Direct.
