natural link

Also called: organic link, editorial link, earned link

A natural link (also called an organic or editorial link) is an inbound link another site gives you voluntarily because your content is useful, not because you paid for, traded, or requested it. Google treats such editorial links as genuine endorsements, unlike manipulated links that break its spam rules.

Search engines read links as a signal of relevance and trust, so a link only carries that weight if the linking site meant to give it. Google’s spam policies draw the line plainly: creating links “primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings” is link spam, which covers bought links, reciprocal “link to me and I’ll link to you” deals, and automated link generation. A natural link sits on the other side. Someone read your page, found it worth citing, and linked without a payment or a request behind it.

By the strictest reading, even white-hat tactics fall short of “natural.” Ahrefs notes a natural link “cannot be the result of any link-building techniques, including so-called white-hat techniques like guest posting or email outreach.” In practice, natural links tend to share a few traits: they sit inside the main content, the surrounding text explains why the source is worth reading, and the anchor is varied rather than stuffed with an exact money keyword.

Example: you publish an original data study and a journalist links to it as their source with your brand name or a phrase like according to this 2026 survey. That is a natural link. A footer link you swapped for one of theirs is not. The difference is intent, and Google has gotten steadily better at telling the two apart and quietly discounting the manipulated kind.

How it affects your traffic

Natural links are the backlinks Google is least likely to discount, so they move rankings in a way paid or spun links no longer reliably do. They also build the topical authority that can help a page become the kind of trusted source AI search engines (AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity) quote and cite. The catch is you rarely get them by luck. Our Link Building work focuses on creating link-worthy assets and earning editorial coverage, so the links you gain read as natural to Google because they are.
