Near me search

Google stopped treating “near me” as literal text to match years ago. You do not need the phrase in your page copy or business name to show up for it. Instead, Google reads intent: when a query looks local, it pulls the searcher’s location and ranks nearby options. As Search Engine Land puts it, millions of phrases carry an “implied” local intent, so a plain search for “dentists” returns local results with no location word attached.

How Google decides the order

Location comes from whatever Google has: IP address, device signals, account settings, and past activity. Per Google’s own documentation, “If a customer doesn’t share where they are, Google uses what it knows about their location.”

Three factors then decide who ranks:

• Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches the query.
• Distance: how far you are from the searcher.
• Prominence: how well-known you are (reviews, links, citations, profile activity).

Distance is the one you cannot optimize directly. A plumber two miles away can outrank a stronger competitor five miles out for the same “plumber near me” search, because proximity is built into the ranking. That is why the same query returns different results block by block.

There is no paid shortcut. Google states plainly there is “no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.” What you control is relevance and prominence: a complete, accurate Business Profile, service and location pages written the way people actually search, and a steady flow of genuine reviews.
