Original content

Also called: unique content, first-hand content

Original content is material you create yourself that adds information, reporting, research, first-hand experience, or analysis not already available elsewhere. It is the opposite of scraped, spun, or lightly reworded pages, and it is a quality signal Google's ranking systems reward.

What Google actually asks

Google frames originality as self-assessment questions, not a plagiarism score. Two matter most: “Does the content provide original information, reporting, research, or analysis?” and, if you draw on other sources, whether you “avoid simply copying or rewriting those sources, and instead provide substantial additional value and originality.” A page can be 100% unique text and still fail this bar if it only restates what ten other pages already say.

The failure modes are named in Google’s spam policies. Scraping means republishing others’ content without adding original value; scaled content abuse means generating many pages with little or no value for users. Reworded AI output at volume lands in the same bucket. The issue is never the tool, it is the absence of anything new.

Where does real originality come from? Your own data or test results, customer examples, photos and screenshots you took, a point of view earned through experience, or reporting nobody else has done. Example: a “best CRM for plumbers” post built from ten CRMs you actually installed and priced beats twenty posts that paraphrase the same vendor pages. That first-hand detail is also what AI answer engines tend to cite, because a model cannot invent a proprietary benchmark or a real field result from its training data. One study of generative engine optimization measured visibility gains of up to 40% from content changes, and distinctive, verifiable material is what earns that lift.

How it affects your traffic

On-page SEO is where originality gets built into a page, in the title, headings, body, and supporting media, not bolted on later. Pages that restate competitor copy compete on identical terms and give Google's core systems little reason to rank them over the source. SEOBRO's On-Page SEO work audits each page for genuine value-add (first-hand detail, original data, a clear point of view), then structures it so both Google and AI answer engines can lift a clean, citeable passage. That is the gap between a page that merely exists and one that pulls in clicks and citations.
