out-of-stock SEO
Also called: out of stock handling, out of stock products seo, out-of-stock product pages
Out-of-stock SEO is the practice of keeping a temporarily unavailable product page live, indexable, and correctly marked up (schema.org availability set to OutOfStock) instead of deleting or 404ing it, so the URL holds its rankings and recovers the moment the item is back in stock.
When a product sells out, the instinct is to delete the page or serve a 404. That throws away the ranking equity, backlinks, and internal links the URL earned. Google’s guidance is the opposite: for a temporary stockout, keep the URL live and set the offer availability to OutOfStock. John Mueller has said that if the URL stays indexable and the structured data flags it as unavailable, Google keeps the URL in its index, then picks the change back up fairly quickly once you restore stock and internal links.
The availability value is the signal
The availability property carries the state. Google reads schema.org enums including InStock, OutOfStock, BackOrder, PreOrder, and SoldOut (short forms without the URL prefix work too). Render price and availability in the server HTML, not lazily via JavaScript, or Google may read a stale state during crawl. Keep three surfaces in sync: on-page text, structured data, and any Merchant Center feed. A mismatch between them is a common cause of feed disapprovals.
A simple decision rule:
- Temporary: keep the page live, mark
OutOfStock, and offer a restock alert or close alternatives. - Discontinued for good: 301 redirect to the nearest replacement or parent category; use
410 Goneonly when nothing replaces it. - Never delete a product you plan to restock. Google warns that re-adding an offer after deletion takes a significant amount of time before it can show again.
Done right, the URL sits idle in the index during the gap and reclaims its position without a fresh ranking climb.
How it affects your traffic
On a real store, out-of-stock churn quietly bleeds traffic. Every deleted or 404'd product resets a URL that Google may take weeks to trust again, and seasonal or supplier gaps hit the same money pages every year. Handling stockouts correctly (keep-live plus accurate availability schema, 301s for true discontinuations) preserves equity you already paid to build and captures demand the instant inventory returns. Our E-commerce SEO work bakes this into catalog templates so availability signals, redirects, and internal links stay correct at scale, not one product at a time.
