An outbound link (also called an external outbound link) is a hyperlink on your page that points to a page on a different domain. It is the opposite of an internal link, which stays within your own site, and separate from a backlink, which points to your site from somewhere else.
Outbound links are how you cite the rest of the web. Google’s guidance is blunt: “Linking to other sites isn’t something to be scared of; in fact, using external links can help establish trustworthiness (for example, citing your sources).” They are not a direct ranking factor, but they signal what your page is about and who you trust, which feeds content quality and E-E-A-T.
Qualify links you can’t vouch for
When you link out, Google reads it as a small endorsement. For links you cannot stand behind, add a rel attribute to the <a> tag:
rel="sponsored"for paid or advertising links.rel="ugc"for user-generated content like comments and forum posts.rel="nofollow"when none of the above fit and you would rather Google not associate your site with, or crawl, the target.
Since September 2019 these are treated as hints rather than strict rules, and since March 1, 2020 nofollow is a hint for crawling and indexing too. A page you nofollow can still be crawled if Google finds it another way, such as a sitemap or a link elsewhere.
The trap most sites fall into is dropping unqualified paid or affiliate links. Google counts buying or selling links that pass ranking signals as a link scheme, so an ad link without rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" is a manual-action risk. Example: a “review” post with a plain dofollow link to a partner who paid you should carry rel="sponsored".
