pageviews

Also called: page views, views

A pageview is a single instance of a page loading (or reloading) in a browser. In Google Analytics 4 it is counted as the page_view event, and the metric that tallies these in reports is called Views.

Every time a page loads or reloads, one pageview is recorded. In Universal Analytics (which stopped processing data on July 1, 2023) the count was split into “Pageviews” (every load, reloads included) and “Unique Pageviews” (multiple loads by the same user in one session collapsed to one). GA4 dropped Unique Pageviews. It now fires a page_view event on each load, and the report metric is “Views,” which also folds in screen_view events from mobile apps.

How pageviews get counted

GA4 sends page_view automatically, including when the browser history state “is changed by the active site.” That detail matters for single-page apps and infinite scroll, where content swaps without a full reload. You can turn the automatic behavior off by setting send_page_view to false and firing the event yourself.

One caveat worth keeping straight: a pageview is a raw count, not a person. Three reloads by one visitor equal three pageviews. To judge reach, pair pageviews with Users or Sessions. And a pageview only confirms that a page rendered, not that anyone read it, stayed, or converted. That gap is why pageviews alone are a weak success metric and why they are most useful when segmented by landing page and cross-checked against engagement.

How it affects your traffic

Pageviews segmented by landing page are one of the fastest ways to see which URLs actually earn organic traffic and which sit crawled but unread. In an SEO audit we cross GA4 Views against crawl and index data to surface thin or orphaned pages that eat crawl budget, high-view pages with weak engagement, and templates quietly leaking visits. When a page ranks but its pageviews stay flat, the fix is usually the title, snippet, or intent match, not more links. A SEO Audit turns those pageview patterns into a prioritized fix list.
