Local SEO

Relevance

Also called: local relevance

In local SEO, relevance is how well a Google Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. It is one of Google's three local ranking factors, alongside distance and prominence, and it decides whether your business is even a candidate to appear for a given query.

What actually feeds relevance

Google reads the structured and unstructured signals attached to your profile and site to judge how closely you match a search. The heaviest signal is your primary category: a business filed as Plumber will not surface for “emergency electrician” no matter how close or well-reviewed it is. After that come secondary categories, the services and products you list, your business description, and the content on your linked website. Review text counts too, because Google mines the words customers use to describe what you do.

A quick example. Two dentists sit on the same block. One picks the primary category Cosmetic dentist, lists “teeth whitening” and “veneers” as services, and has reviews mentioning both. The other just picks Dentist. For the query “veneers near me,” the first profile is far more relevant, so it takes the local pack slot even though distance is identical.

Relevance is a matching problem, not a popularity contest. That is what separates it from prominence (reputation, links, review counts) and distance (raw geography, which you cannot change short of opening a new location). Of the three, relevance is the factor you control most directly, through accurate categorization and specific, honest profile and website data that genuinely reflects what you sell. Google’s own advice is short: give complete and detailed business info so it can connect you to the right searches.

How it affects your traffic

If your profile is not relevant to a query, you are not in the running, so no amount of proximity or good reviews will put you in the local pack for that search. Getting relevance right (primary category, services, description, and matching website pages) is usually the fastest lever to start appearing for the searches that send calls and direction requests. Our Local SEO service audits your categories and profile signals against the queries your customers actually use, then aligns your Business Profile and site so Google can match you to the searches worth winning.
