replatforming

Also called: cms migration, ecommerce replatforming, platform migration

Replatforming is moving a website to a new CMS or ecommerce platform, for example WooCommerce to Shopify or a custom build to a headless stack. Because it usually rewrites URLs, templates, and site structure at once, Google treats it as a site move that can hold or lose organic traffic depending entirely on how the migration is executed.

What changes during a replatform

A replatform almost always touches three things at once: your URL structure, your page templates, and how content is stored. Moving from store.com/product.php?id=42 to store.com/products/blue-widget rewrites every product URL, so each old address needs its own 301 redirect to the exact matching page on the new platform. Sending everything to the homepage collapses your topical signals into one page and discards rankings.

Google treats this as a “site move with URL changes.” Its guidance is to map old URLs to new ones, redirect straight to the destination (no chains longer than three hops), keep those redirects for at least a year, and expect ranking swings while it recrawls and reindexes. A small or medium site takes a few weeks to settle; a large catalog takes longer.

The bigger trap is changing too much at cutover. If you rewrite copy, swap meta descriptions, drop schema, and switch platforms in one release, then traffic dips, you cannot isolate the cause. Keep content, metadata, headings, and internal links as close to identical as possible on launch day, then improve once the new build is stable and indexed. A replatform is not just an engineering project. The SEO parity check is what protects the rankings you already own.

How it affects your traffic

A replatform is the single riskiest project an established site runs. A sloppy one can erase years of rankings in the days after launch through broken redirects, dropped metadata, or lost schema; a clean one is invisible to both users and Google. The difference is a migration plan (full URL map, redirect QA, template parity checks, a staged recrawl) built and pressure-tested before cutover, not patched after traffic drops. That planning and oversight is exactly what our SEO Consulting work covers, so switching platforms protects the organic revenue you already have instead of gambling it.
