Review gating

Also called: review filtering, sentiment-based review gating

Review gating is the prohibited practice of screening customers by sentiment first, then steering only the happy ones to post a public review while diverting unhappy ones to a private channel. Google bans it, and the FTC's 2024 reviews rule targets review suppression.

How it works and why platforms ban it

A gated flow usually starts with a private survey or a smiley-face prompt sent by text or email. Customers who tap “happy” get routed to your Google Business Profile review link. Customers who tap “unhappy” get sent to a private feedback form that never becomes public. The result is a rating that looks better than the real customer experience.

Google’s Maps user-generated content policy is direct: businesses must not “discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or selectively solicit positive reviews from customers.” Getting caught can mean reviews stripped from your profile, and repeated abuse can put the whole profile at risk. In the US there is a second layer. The FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule took effect on October 21, 2024, and bans suppressing negative reviews through tactics like intimidation or misrepresenting that the reviews shown are all the reviews received. Penalties can reach $51,744 per violation.

What is allowed is broad, unfiltered asking. You can invite every customer to leave a review by email, text, a card, or a QR code, as long as you do not pre-screen sentiment, offer incentives, or dictate what they write. Ask everyone, accept whatever they say, and reply to the negatives in public. That is slower than a curated 4.9, but it is a rating you can defend.

How it affects your traffic

Reviews feed local-pack rankings, so juicing them is tempting. But review gating puts the asset you depend on at risk: Google can remove reviews it judges inauthentic, sometimes taking legitimate ones with them, and can suspend a Google Business Profile for repeated violations. A compliant review-generation system, one that asks every customer and answers negatives openly, is part of the Local SEO work that grows map-pack visibility without the platform or legal exposure.
