Most reviews never happen unless you ask. Review generation turns that ask into a repeatable system: a request goes out shortly after the visit, over a channel the customer already uses (SMS or email), with a one-tap link or QR code that opens your Google review form.

Ask everyone, not just fans

The rule that matters is neutrality. Sending review invites only to happy customers, a tactic called “review gating,” violates Google’s policies, which require you to ask all customers rather than selectively solicit positive ones. It also carries legal risk: the FTC’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule, in effect since October 21, 2024, bans suppressing or misrepresenting reviews and allows civil penalties up to $51,744 per violation. Google also prohibits incentives, so you cannot offer a discount or freebie in exchange for a review. Keep the copy plain and send it to all customers.

A compliant request looks like:

Thanks for coming in, [name]. A quick review helps other locals find us: [review-link]

No steering, no “if you enjoyed your visit,” no five-star nudge. Then reply to the reviews you get, positive and negative, because Google says responding to reviews shows you value your customers and their feedback.

The payoff is velocity. A steady stream of fresh, dated reviews signals an active, trusted business, and Google states that more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Volume plus recency, done inside the rules, is what separates a profile that keeps climbing from one that stalls.
