Review management
Also called: reputation management, online review management, review response management
Review management is the ongoing practice of monitoring, responding to, and generating customer reviews across platforms like Google Business Profile, Yelp, and Trustpilot. It protects reputation and builds the review volume, ratings, and recency that shape how local businesses rank.
Why reviews move local rankings
Google treats reviews as part of “prominence,” one of the three inputs (relevance, distance, prominence) behind local results. Its guidance is plain: “More reviews and positive ratings can help your business’s local ranking,” and “when you reply to customer reviews, it shows that you value their feedback.” Practitioner surveys of local search consistently place review signals (volume, average rating, recency, and response rate) among the factors that separate the map pack from page two.
Good review management runs on a few habits:
- Respond to every review, positive and negative, ideally within a day.
- Ask happy customers for reviews on a steady cadence so recency stays fresh.
- Keep replies specific, not copy-pasted, so they read as genuine engagement.
- Watch every platform, not just Google, since Yelp, Trustpilot, and industry sites shape both buyer trust and AI answer engines.
One trap worth naming: you cannot manufacture star snippets. Google stopped showing “self-serving” review stars back in 2019, so pasting a Google or Facebook reviews widget into your own LocalBusiness schema will not earn rich-result stars in search. Those pages are, in Google’s words, “ineligible for star review feature.” Reviews still lift your ranking through your Business Profile and through third-party listings that Google trusts. They just will not produce on-site star markup for your own brand.
How it affects your traffic
Review signals directly influence whether you appear in the local pack, where most "near me" clicks and phone calls originate. A profile with steady, well-answered, recent reviews outranks a stale one, so review management is a core lever inside a Local SEO engagement, alongside NAP consistency, Business Profile optimization, and location landing pages. Neglect it and competitors with fresher, higher-rated profiles take the map slots (and the calls) even when your website is technically stronger.
