Review velocity is the rate and consistency at which a business earns new customer reviews over time. In local SEO it acts as a freshness signal: a steady, ongoing stream of genuine reviews tends to outperform a large but stale review count.
Why steady beats spiky
Google’s official local ranking guidance lists review count and rating under “prominence,” and says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It does not name “velocity” as a factor. Velocity is a practitioner concept: the observed pattern that recent, regular review activity reads as a live, trusted business, while a profile with 200 old reviews and nothing this year looks dormant.
The failure mode is the spike. If a shop that normally earns one or two reviews a month suddenly collects 50 in a single day, that break in pattern can look inorganic and invite scrutiny instead of a lift. Steady wins: a plumber earning three to five reviews a week signals health without tripping alarms.
Building velocity the safe way is boring and allowed. Google encourages reminding customers to leave a review through a link or QR code, and bans incentives outright: offering discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews counts as fake and misleading content. So you can ask and make it easy, you cannot pay. Stagger outreach (for example, 20 to 30 requests a week) instead of blasting your whole customer list at once, and keep replying to reviews, which signals ongoing engagement to both Google and the people reading them.
