search query

Also called: query, search string, search term

A search query is the exact text a person types or speaks into a search engine to find something. It differs from a keyword: the keyword is the abstracted target you optimize for, while the query is the raw, often misspelled or padded string a real user actually enters.

Query vs keyword, and why it matters

Marketers plan around keywords, but people search with queries. WordStream frames a keyword as “the Platonic ideal of a search query, an abstraction that we extrapolate from multiple search queries,” while any single query “may be misspelled, out of order or have other words tacked on to it.” Dozens of distinct queries (cheap running shoes size 11, best budget trainers for running) can map back to one keyword you target.

Google does not match your page to the literal string. Its own documentation says the first job is to “establish what you’re looking for, the intent behind your query,” then it applies language models, spelling correction, and a “sophisticated synonym system that allows us to find relevant documents even if they don’t contain the exact words you used.” So a page written around “adjust laptop brightness” can rank for the query “change laptop brightness.”

In Google Search Console, the Performance report’s Queries dimension shows the real strings that earned your impressions and clicks. That is your ground truth: queries you never targeted but already rank for, question-shaped queries that deserve a dedicated page, and long-tail variants that expose intent your current copy misses. Reading queries (not just your planned keywords) is how you find the gap between what people ask and what your pages answer.

How it affects your traffic

Traffic is won at the query level, not the keyword level. Most pages already surface for dozens of queries you never planned for, and mining those in Search Console (then reshaping titles, headings, and on-page copy to match the intent behind them) is one of the fastest ways to grow clicks without publishing new content. SEOBRO's SEO Consulting digs into your real query data to find where searcher wording diverges from your page wording, then prioritizes the fixes that actually move pipeline.
