A self-referencing canonical is a rel="canonical" link tag whose href points to the page's own URL, signaling that this exact address is the version search engines should index and consolidate duplicate signals onto.

Google recognizes three ways to declare a canonical URL, ranked by strength: a redirect and a rel="canonical" link are both strong signals, while listing the URL in a sitemap is a weak one. A self-referencing canonical uses the middle method and points it at the page’s own address.

Why bother if a page has no duplicates

Google treats canonicals as a preference, not a rule: “your site will likely do just fine without specifying a canonical preference.” So why add one? Because most pages carry accidental duplicates you never created. Tracking parameters (?utm_source=...), session IDs, uppercase paths, trailing slashes, and www vs non-www all produce distinct URLs that resolve to the same content. A self-referencing tag tells Google the clean address is the one to index and consolidates link signals from every variant onto it. Google’s John Mueller called this a good practice that “makes it clear to us which page you want to have indexed,” while noting it is not critical.

Get the details right. Use an absolute URL, not a relative path. Keep exactly one canonical per page, in the <head>, not the body. Point it at a live, indexable 200-status URL, not a redirect or a 404. And internally, link to the canonical version rather than a parameterized copy.

A wrong self-canonical (a template that points every paginated or filtered page back at page one) can deindex pages you wanted ranked, so the logic behind the tag matters as much as the tag itself.
