SEO forecasting is the practice of projecting future organic traffic, conversions, or revenue from search by combining keyword search volume, current or target rankings, and click-through rate by position, then adjusting for seasonality and business context.
How a forecast gets built
The workhorse formula is estimated clicks = search volume x CTR at target position. You pull a keyword’s monthly search volume, decide the position you can realistically reach, then apply a click-through rate for that slot. Rather than borrowing a generic CTR table, careful forecasters build a click curve from their own Google Search Console data: plot every non-branded query’s average position against its CTR, fit an exponential trendline, and read off the equation. Greenlane’s published example, y = 0.465e^(-0.259x), returns an estimated CTR (y) for any position (x). Multiply that CTR by volume and you have a per-keyword projection you can roll up to a page, a cluster, or a whole site.
Three inputs decide whether the number holds: demand (volume and its seasonality), your ranking trajectory, and CTR. Each is uncertain. Search Console reports average position across time, place, and device, and the same query can behave differently for two searchers. SERP features (ads, People Also Ask, AI Overviews) skim clicks off the organic results, so a position-one listing today does not earn what it did a few years ago. That is why a defensible forecast ships as a range (conservative, expected, aggressive) tied to explicit rank and CTR assumptions, not a single hero figure a finance review can pick apart.
