serp carousel

Also called: carousel, host carousel, carousel rich result

A SERP carousel is a horizontally scrollable row of results or entities in Google Search that users swipe through, mostly on mobile. It appears either as a host carousel built from one site's ItemList structured data, or as a Google-assembled strip such as Top Stories, images, videos, or popular products.

Carousels come in two kinds, and each is earned a completely different way.

Host carousels vs Google-assembled strips

A host carousel pulls multiple tiles from one website. You create it by adding ItemList structured data whose itemListElement array holds ListItem entries, paired with a supported content type. Google’s carousel (ItemList) docs cover Course, Movie, Recipe, and Restaurant. A separate carousels format, documented as beta and limited to the EEA, Turkey, and South Africa, adds LocalBusiness subtypes (Hotel, VacationRental), plus Product and Event.

Two layouts are allowed. A summary page gives each ListItem only type, position, and a url to a separate detail page. An all-in-one page carries full item data with on-page anchor links. One hard rule: every item in the list must be the same type. Don’t mix a recipe and a product in one list.

The second kind is the carousel Google builds itself: Top Stories, image and video strips, popular products, and entity rows next to a knowledge panel. You cannot mark these up directly. You compete for them through topical relevance, freshness, and (for news or products) publisher and feed signals.

One reality check before you invest. Carousels render as horizontal scroll, so a tile at position five earns far fewer taps than the first card, and rank trackers often cannot report your exact slot inside one. Semrush, for example, notes it cannot collect the URLs behind a carousel, only whether the feature appears.

How it affects your traffic

Carousels are high-visibility real estate, but most are won by matching the right structured data to the right page type, not by writing more copy. An SEO Consulting engagement audits which carousel formats your queries actually trigger, verifies your ItemList markup is valid and complete, and prioritizes the formats with real traffic upside over the ones a rank tracker cannot even measure. That turns a vague "we want rich results" goal into a scoped list of pages to fix, so effort goes where a swipeable tile can actually add clicks.
