Service area

Also called: service radius, service-area business, SAB

A service area is the set of geographic zones (cities, postal codes, or regions) a business lists in its Google Business Profile to show where it serves customers. It lets service-area businesses like plumbers or cleaners appear in local search without publishing a storefront address.

Google treats service areas as a profile attribute, not a ranking lever. When you register a Business Profile as a service-area business (SAB), you list the specific cities, postal codes, or regions you travel to instead of showing a public street address. Google caps this at up to 20 service areas, and the overall footprint should not stretch more than about 2 hours of driving time from where your business is based. You specify areas by named place or postal code, not by drawing a radius.

Service area vs. ranking coverage

A common mistake is treating the service-area list as a map of where you will rank. It is not. Proximity between the searcher and your registered location still shapes the local pack, so listing 20 towns does not place you in the map results across all 20. As local SEO consultant Dalton Luka notes, service areas mainly help visibility and local justifications, while proximity stays the stronger ranking signal. To compete in a town you do not physically sit in, you usually need a dedicated, genuinely useful location landing page, not just a checkbox in the profile.

Two setups exist. A pure SAB (plumber, cleaner, mobile mechanic) hides its address and shows only service areas. A hybrid business (a shop that also delivers) shows its storefront plus a service area. Google’s guidelines are firm: hide the address if you have no public storefront, do not list areas you don’t actually serve, and don’t register an unstaffed virtual office as a location.

How it affects your traffic

Your service-area settings decide which local searches you are even eligible to show up for, but they do not win rankings on their own. If you serve ten towns and only rank in the one where you sit, the fix is location-specific pages plus consistent NAP and review signals across the whole footprint, not a longer list in the profile. That build-out (profile tuning, location pages, proximity-aware targeting) is the core of an ongoing Local SEO engagement, which is where a scattered service-area list turns into qualified calls from each town you cover.
